Once a year Thailand holds a Thai Military Draft Lottery in each of the provinces. If you’re above the age of 21 and male by gender, registering for military service in Thailand becomes unavoidable. A Thai can volunteer for service on lottery day, or wait and see if the quota for their province has been met. If the quota has not been reached, there is an actual lottery. The lottery consists of drawing cards from a container. A red card means you will report to the army in 30 days, a black card exempts a Thai from military service. The process is long and yet relatively simple. After hours of paperwork and a cursory physical exam, a Thai can volunteer for the military or wait to see of the quota has been filled and participate in the lottery. As it turned out the quota of 36 men was filled with volunteers and the was no need for a lottery. At 1:00 PM an announcement was made that everyone could go home, there was no need to draw cards.
