The Right Light

The Right Light I was having a discussion with a friend yesterday on Facebook about an image when the discussion turned to light. I thought it might be a good idea to expand on that discussion in my teaching series. Light, is the essence of what we do photographically. The word photography derives from the Greek φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς (phōs), “light” and γραφή (graphé) “representation by means of lines” or “drawing”, together meaning “drawing with light”.[1] Photography has been with us for a while. The first surviving mention of the...

Tam Boon New Years Celebration

Tam Boon New Years Celebration Tam Boon in Thai literally means Merit Making, having to do with Karma. The concept was aptly described by Daniel in the movie “Karate Kid” as what goes around comes around. It’s kind of like a cosmic bank account. You put good stuff in and eventually you draw good stuff back out. You should try and avoid running on too much credit. Anyway, New Years Tam Boon is especially important so you can start the new year off right.  Here on the farm in Nakhon Nayok I’m fortunate, and am invited to all of the spiritual goings on. My wife’s mother is very involved in the...

The River Kwai Resotel Resort

The River Kwai Resotel Resort Being married to a Thai wife has it’s advantages. Jang booked a stay in a resort a couple of months ago to surprise me. It turned out to be just the kind of place I really enjoy. It is off the beaten path, and I’m all about places that are not on the main highway, any main highway. Actually you can’t even get to this place by car. Well at least the last few miles you can’t. You have to travel by on of those sleek long Thai boats. the kind featured in a James Bond movie some time back. It is about a ten minute ride in one of these boats on the Kwai river to the pier of...

Low Light Photography

Low Light Photography I was recently asked how I shoot in low light. Specifically do I shoot in manual, and how do I determine aperture and shutter speed? This is a really good question and great topic of discussion. First I’m sorry to say there is no silver bullet, no magic settings, brand of camera or other equipment that is a quick answer to the question. And how I shoot low light really depends on what I’m after, what the situation is what equipment I’m carrying etc. The question is further complicated by the fact that I am a generalist. I shoot many types of photography. I shoot landscapes or scenics,...

A Birthday Fit For A King

A Birthday Fit For A King The Thai people love to celebrate. They are known throughout the world for their fun spirit and willingness to have a great time. There is only one thing they love more than a good party, and that is their King. So when King Bhumibol Adulyadej turned the 84, on December 5th, which happens to be a very significant birthday in Thai culture, for one week all of Thailand became one amazing no holds barred celebration. King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the worlds longest reining monarch, and the love his people have for him is well founded. He has spent his life working for the Thai people trying to make...

Thanksgiving 2011

Thanksgiving 2011 I thought I’d share a story this Thanksgiving. I was looking through my hard drives and found this picture I took some time back near Chiang Mai, Thailand, and it pretty well expresses the feeling of my story. ————— You know, I’m not a real spiritual robe wearing bead carrying kind of guy. I don’t wake up every morning and say a thank you prayer. I really should you know, I have a ton to be thankful for, I’m blessed with a beautiful family both here and in the U.S.A. I live in a fairytale land, and get to do almost anything I want....

The Ancient City

The Ancient City I had a chance to visit a rather unique attraction in Bangkok, the Ancient City Samut Prakan, once named Ancient Siam. The Park / Museum is 320 acres and has a shape like the map of Thailand. The are more than 100 monuments constructed at reduced scale but big enough to imagine the actual size. I have read negative reviews criticizing the park for replicating things that exist in Thailand at a somewhat reduced scale. However I thought it was magnificent. I have never been to most of the “real” places so to me it was both educational and spectacular. An added benefit for me as a...

My Wedding – Preparations 11.08.11

My Wedding – Preparations 11.08.11 I have had many adventures in my life. I have been fortunate and have traveled to many places, and have seen and experienced many things. My own Thai wedding in Nakhon Nayok rates right up there as one of my most unusual experiences. Getting married at 61 while not totally unusual or unique is a life changing event, and by itself under ordinary circumstances would be stressful. Add to the situation that no one at the wedding speaks a word of english, and I only know a few broken sentences of Thai, and have only a cursory knowledge of Thai customs … well, you get the idea. A Thai wedding...
