A Photo Project Documenting A Woman Farmer in Rural Thailand
I have spent the last few years documenting life in rural Thailand. One main areas of my focus has been Siri, a mother with nine children, many grandchildren. She is a rice farmer, and matriarch of her family. She is an amazing woman. Every year she leases a field and grows, harvests and processes rice by hand. She is deeply religious and finds time to visit the local Buddhist temple on an almost daily basis. Because of her work in the fields and spirituality she is highly respected in the local community.
In the rural community of Nakhon Nayok, most of the men, and many younger women, leave the farms to find work in the larger cities, where the pay is much more than they could earn farming rice, and they can only visit their families on weekends and holidays as time permits. So Siri’s older working children leave their kids for Siri to tend to while they are earning a living. This means that Siri’s home becomes a hub for family activities on the weekends. A blog post, could never display a full set of images for this project, so below is a sampling of my work. Other images can be seen on Flickr here: A Woman’s World
